"In my years of painting thoroughbred racing, I have always been fascinated by the way that American and European jockeys ride so differently. American jockeys seem to ride low and tight, with a give and take, close behind the horse’s neck. European jockeys seem to sit up high out of saddle, in the middle of the horse, using their bodies in a more animated manner to urge the horse on. This makes the European race horse more extended than the American horse."
